Why are teachers in important in a yoga journey?

Do you remember your favourite subject of study at school or university? Do you remember the reasons as to why you took keen interest and developed a fascination to study more just for that subject?

It was probably because of your teacher. The quality and style of teaching can make or break one’s interest in the subject. This not only holds true for academics, but also in the wellness sciences. Teacher’s are ‘’experience providers’’. They take you through the journey of learning, and provide relevant exposure to the topic.

A well-versed and experienced yoga teacher can provide an incredible impact on people. They can be a role-model and inspire others to tap into their true capabilities and potential. Teachers in wellness play a crucial role in people’s lives.

In today’s world, people are becoming increasingly aware of the profound benefits of yoga. This is why there is an ever growing increasing demand for yoga teachers. Without a teacher, one cannot learn yoga. Yoga must be taught by an experienced practitioner only. It is not a science that can be imbibed through books alone. In fact, it is quite harmful to learn asanas and yogic practices through a book or an e-book.

Teachers are responsible for creating a conducive ambience for the class. The teacher is also responsible for the safety of all participants, in guiding them through a series of yoga asanas. A certified yoga teacher will have a solid foundation in physiology and anatomy. They observe the class with a keen eye for alignment and corrections. He or she would be able to quickly provide corrections, with ease and without the use of props. This will induce a feeling of safety and trust for the students, so that they can truly relax and stay and provide their complete attention in class.

In the beginning of anyone’s journey into a specific genre of yoga, it's a new normal to have pre - conceived notions which can arise from half-baked information. A teacher clarifies doubts, myths and provides all relevant information which thereby allows participants to have clarity on their views.

As all excellent teachers can guide, the best quality of a yoga teacher is compassion & understanding. These are great qualities to have in a yoga teacher. Imparting classic yogic knowledge in a compassionate manner, and imbibing spiritual wisdom is best received by teachers with experience. Teachers also put in effort into creating an ambience in class where participants can let go of their inhibitions, thoughts of their outside world and responsibilities, so they can focus on the contents of the session.

It’s important to remember that it’s not just the students who benefit from class, the teachers go through the learning process as well and reinforce the knowledge and work on themselves more. It’s a win for everyone. Teachers too receive the holistic benefits in class, even when they are responsible for providing them. The active nature and regularity of sessions provides long term benefits and sharpens the skill and energy levels of the teacher.

Get to know your teacher well, as much as you take in the effort to get to know the contents & syllabus of the classes you’re getting into. A teacher plays a vital role in your learning process.
